The Fourth Age

Project working in a dementia care home with Learning for the Fourth Age - visualising memory and identity.

Working in a dementia care home for 6 months exploring the themes of narrative, identity and memory. Volunteering with charity 'Learning for the Fourth Age', each week I met several residents of the home and ran storytelling workshops with them.

Recording each conversation with a dictaphone, I transcribed these snippets into experimental 'memoirs' that represent the narrative identity of each individual, far from their assumed mental state and identity affixed to an illness. The images above document the process - as I wrote/photographed and illustrated each week my findings resulting in an exhibition of experimental ‘memoir’ books in Sheffield.
