The Fourth Age

Project working in a dementia care home with Learning for the Fourth Age - visualising memory and identity

As part of my BA Thesis project in English Literature, I worked in a dementia home for 6 months looking at narrative, identity and memory. Each week I worked for a project 'Learning for the Fourth Age', meeting the several residents of the home and running narrative workshops with them.

Each time I went, I took a dictaphone, and transcribed them into experimental 'memoirs' that represented the narrative identity of each individual far from their assumed mental state and identity affixed to an illness. The images above document the process - as I wrote/photographed and illustrated each week my findings.
